Facebook Highlights from DMEXCO 2018

Facebook Business

Over the past two days at DMEXCO, we hosted thousands of people at our Facebook booth, joined conversations with industry leaders and conducted training sessions to help people master marketing on our platforms. Here are some highlights:

Discussing advertising challenges and opportunities

Facebook's Managing Director of Central Europe, Martin Ott, joined a panel of marketing and data ethics leaders to discuss the advertising industry's challenge to balance innovation and creativity with more responsible business practices. Ott explained Facebook's dedication to building an experience that maximizes the good and minimizes bad actors, underscoring our responsibility to provide a safe and secure environment for people on our platforms. He shared our philosophy of building for people first and explained how this approach helps ensure we build business tools and marketing solutions that are socially-conscious and create value for people on our platforms. He shared some examples of how Facebook is tackling this challenge by giving consumers more control over their experience, increasing transparency in advertising, protecting election integrity and preventing the spread of fake news and hate speech.

Exploring vertical video on Instagram

Instagram's Head of Business & Media, Jim Squires, took audience members through the journey of how Instagram has evolved over the years and shared what those developments mean for businesses. He explained how Instagram constantly observes how people are using the platform, and how they want to communicate, and then uses those insights to build the tools and capabilities that support the experience people want. That ongoing feedback loop is what led Instagram to evolve from photos with filters, to videos and more immersive experiences, to Instagram Stories and IGTV. Squires explained that vertical video is the common thread throughout our recent innovations since it aligns with the way people consume content on mobile. Vertical video ads on Instagram give brands the opportunity to create compelling ads that fit seamlessly into the consumer browsing experience.

Offering marketing tips and training sessions at the Facebook booth

To help people learn how to use stories effectively across Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp Status, we held Story School both in English and in German. Since stories are where consumers share and discover things they love, it's important for marketers to understand how to communicate creatively using this format. We helped people master creative basics and practice more advanced stories techniques in an interactive session taught by Facebook's Creative Shop.
